The Technology and Human Rights Symposium commenced on October 3rd, 2024, with its first event, Fair Chips: Addressing Human Rights Issues in the Semiconductor Industry and Supply Chain. This session featured a presentation by Shalala Valiyeva, a Washington College of Law SJD Candidate and an expert in trade and investment law.
Ms. Valiyeva shared her in-depth research on the semiconductor industry, a critical sector underpinning modern technology. She provided valuable insights into the human rights challenges associated with this industry, including the need for fair wages, safe working conditions, and greater transparency across global supply chains.
The discussion highlighted several key issues:
- The growing demand for semiconductors and its impact on labor rights.
- The importance of corporate accountability in addressing human rights risks within supply chains.
- Innovative strategies for ensuring ethical practices in an industry that is vital to technological advancement.
Students had the opportunity to engage directly with Ms. Valiyeva, asking questions about her work and gaining a deeper understanding of the intersection between technology, trade, and human rights. This event marked an impactful start to the Symposium, fostering dialogue on how industries can balance innovation with the protection of fundamental human rights. The Center remains committed to promoting awareness and advocacy in such critical areas of global importance.
